Honoring the Legacy:

San Antonio Mission Indian Descendants Day at the Capitol

We are honored to share a major milestone in our journey of recognition and advocacy. On April 15, 2025, the Texas House of Representatives officially recognized the San Antonio Mission Indian Descendants (SAMID) with a Day of Recognition.

House Resolution #765: A Historic Moment

House Resolution #765, sponsored by Rep. John Lujan, and with the strong support of Rep. Josey Garcia, declared April 14, 2025, as San Antonio Mission Indian Descendants Day at the Capitol. This powerful gesture publicly acknowledges the generations of Indigenous people who helped shape San Antonio, and in turn, Texas itself.

We were honored to stand in unity with leaders who understand and support our mission. Alongside Rep. Lujan, Representatives Marc LaHood, Liz Campos, Ray Lopez, and Mark Dorazio stood in solidarity, celebrating the living legacy of the descendants who built and continue to sustain this community.

Centering Truth: No Missions Without Indigenous People

This recognition is not symbolic, it is rooted in historical truth and lived experience. We like to remind everyone:

Without San Antonio, there would be no Texas. Without the Missions, there would be no San Antonio. And without the Indigenous people there would have been no Missions.

The Resolution honors this truth. It recognizes that we are the descendants of the original peoples who lived on this land before, during, and after colonization. Many of us carry deep cultural and familial ties to the Missions and surrounding communities. Our presence is enduring and our connection unbroken.

Our Work: Ensuring the Descendants Are Never Forgotten

At San Antonio Mission Indian Descendants, we work every day to ensure that our people are not forgotten, that our stories are told, our rights respected, and our culture preserved. Through community engagement, education, advocacy, and cultural stewardship, we continue to honor our ancestors and protect our heritage.

This  recognition strengthens our voice and our visibility, and we are incredibly grateful to Rep. Lujan and Rep. Garcia for their unwavering support.
